Are solar panels really self cleaning?

Well, it is true that the majority of solar panels are promoted as being self-cleaning, and so should require relatively little additional cleaning. However, "self-cleaning" is a bit of a misnomer, like "self-cleaning" windows. For sure they don't need cleaning so frequently, but they do need regular cleaning to remain efficient producers of electricity. Grime, bird poo and heavy dust don't need to cover an entire solar panel to have a negative effect on it's performance. In certain situations, such as solar panels mounted in a particularly dry area (allowing dust and bird droppings to build up), or where the solar panel's tilt angle is less than five degrees, most manufacturers recommend regular cleaning to ensure the panels continue to work efficient as electricity generators.

How Do We Clean Render?

With over 20 years experience in the exterior render, exterior coating and cladding industry, we know how to restore your render to optimal conditions.

We clean your building with steam heated to 150° at low pressure to eradicate stubborn stains without damaging the render and paintwork of your property.

We then use HSE approved biocide chemicals designed to eliminate algae and discolouration and prevent the growth of organic materials that can stain your walls.

We work closely with most of the major render manufacturers including K-Rend and often receive work directly from them to resolve problems with new and nearly new developments.

A newly rendered building looks fantastic, especially with the range of coloured K-rend and other brands currently on the market. This type of coloured render is often sold as maintenance free, unfortunately the reality is that within a few years algae often settles on the surface of the render making the new render look old, tired and dirty. This is usually caused by biofilms such as red, green and black algae along with moss. Add in traffic pollution and other atmospheric pollution and it doesn’t take long for your beautiful building to start looking old and dirty.

The most common problem we encounter is caused by water ingress in to the render itself. This allows for the formation and spread of algae causing discolouration and making your once beautiful render looking dirty, stained and unsightly with non of it’s original vibrant colours.

Keven did a brilliant job on my Mum's rendered bungalow. Render was only 8 or 9 years old but it had not weathered well, particularly on the rear SW facing elevation. Render was a K rend equivalent, Weber Ivory (coloured render, not painted). So glad we found Lancashire Softwash as the transformation was amazing, all 4 walls were treated and the job was completed in around 5 hours.
